What It Is.

Creative Reaction Lab’s Artwork for Equity Advocacy Campaign Program was launched in 2017 in recognition of the United Nation’s International Day of Elimination of Racial Discrimination. In support of their work for racial and health equity, Artwork for Equity selects Black and Latinx designers and artists to produce original images in the form of posters promoting inclusion, equity, liberation, and justice for all races.

Adapted from the Creative Reaction Lab site.

Why It’s Here.

In 2019, the last year it was open to creatives over 25, I was one of sixteen designers and artists selected from around the country to contribute.

Gerechtigkeit liegt im Auge der Entfremdeten or Equity Is in the Eye of the Disenfranchised (as Google translated) takes much of its inspiration from some for the most effective poster design in history — Fascist propaganda — and co-opts, reinterprets, and subverts it to disconcert and challenge the viewer to engage with the piece despite whatever confusion or unease they might experience.

That’s some heavy shit for a poster of a buncha eyes.

So What?

Aside from the deep sense of gratitude to have been selected from hundreds of applicants and allowed the opportunity to support such an important and distinguished organization by doing what I love to do?

Well, there’s this …

Designing for Justice

The original framed piece (seen at left held by some rando delivering it to the CRL offices) was auctioned at the annual event and show.

Prints — at a slightly smaller size — were (and still are) sold to support Creative Reaction Lab’s “youth-led, community-centered movement of a new type of Civic Leader: Redesigners for Justice.”

To support these efforts, you can purchase a print from CRL.

⇠ The Eyes Have It

Each of the eyes represents by their size the percentage of the global population with each color. The percentages are listed around the border of the poster.

Seriously, who even talks like that? 🤨
